Network News: south east Scotland

Lindsay McKrell
Member Lindsay McKrell, a previous winner in the New Writers Awards, has  been named on the longlist for the prestigious Times Children's Fiction Competition, run by Chicken House.

Well done, Lindsay! Lindsay reports that the competition was the spur she needed to finish up work on the project, called LILY WICKED. See the full longlist here.

Congratulations to new member Paul Bristow, whose book THE SUPERPOWER PROJECT has recently been published by Floris.

Described as Marvel meets Transformers, it's a mystery adventure with a steampunk twist and was shortlisted for the Kelpies Prize 2014. Welcome to SCBWI SES, Paul, and congrats! See more here

It's a huge accomplishment to pick up a New Writers Award from the Scottish Book Trust, so well done to P.M. Freestone! Peta ("peeta") writes YA fiction, has published a handful of short stories (including work in anthologies from Penguin Books), and is now developing several novel-length projects. The NWA carries a cash award, mentoring and a week-long retreat at Cove Park. Congrats Peta, we're all jealous! See more about the awards here.

We're delighted for member Barbara Henderson, whose middle-grade novel FIR FOR LUCK has been picked up by Cranachan Publishing for its Pokey Hat imprint. The book, set in the 19th century, tells the story of a 12-year-old girl who decides to fight back against the Highland clearances. Congratulations Barbara! Read more.
